THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS AT THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTOLOGY AND EMBRYOLOGY NAMED AFTER PROFESSOR A.G. KNORRE: TRADITIONS, MODERNITY AND PROSPECTS
Abstract
Department of Histology and Embryology of the Leningrad Pediatric Medical Institute (at present Saint-Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University) was founded in 1932. The department has come a long way, it was headed by many outstanding morphologists, but the greatest contribution to the formation and improvement of the educational process at the department was made by Professor A.G. Knorre. The article reveals his role in the changes that have been introduced to the teaching of both histology and embryology in medical faculties. The number of hours of the embryology course was doubled in comparison with the program, the teaching of embryology was put after the section of special histology, the emphasis was placed on human development in evolutionary aspect. A.G. Knorre also made changes to the lecture course of histology proper: instead of a series of lectures on special histology, lectures on some debatable problems were added to the plan. The article also discusses the role of A.G. Knorre in the leadership of the student scientific society circle at the department and the work with students of the faculty of advanced training. In conclusion, the article outlines the main problems that the department staff will have to solve in the near future for further improvement of the educational process. First of all, we are talking about working with histological slides in digital format and writing a modern textbook on human embryology.
