Evaluation of awareness about osteoporosis pharmacotherapy based on pharmaceutical worker survey results
Abstract
Osteoporosis has a very severe pathogenesis, which is often manifests itself by fractures that have a different localization. Consequences of fractures (such as restriction of motor activity (hypokinesia), lack of communication, social isolation, loss of independence, appearance dissatisfaction) become a heavy burden for the patient. The urgency of the problem is based on the prevalence of the disease among the population (every third woman and every fifth man have osteoporosis) and a narrow range of used drugs. This article is devoted to assess of pharmaceutical worker awareness about osteoporosis drugs therapy based on survey’s results. 60 pharmacists with different length of service were surveyed in Astrakhan answering 16 questions. The article considers the attitude of pharmaceutical workers to the range of antiosteoporotic drugs, specifies the priorities of pharmaceutical consulting, awareness about effective and safe treatment of osteoporosis and unwanted side effects of antiosteoporotic drugs. The survey revealed a lack of literacy of pharmacy workers in pharmaceutical consulting of visitors (including decreed groups) about antiosteoporotic drugs and their side effects. Recommendations are made to increase professional knowledge which will undoubtedly entail raise pharmacy organizations profits.
