GENERAL CULTURAL COMPETENCE OF SPb SPMU STUDENTS
Abstract
General cultural competences play a no less important role in training of future doctors than professional ones. The aim of the study was to analyze medical students’ basic knowledge in various fields of science and culture. An anonymous survey of students of 1st year SPbGPMU (196 respondents) with a specially designed questionnaire (20 blocks of 5 questions: “Sport”, “Cinema”, “Visual Arts”, “Geography”, “Fashion”, “Biology”, “Chemistry”, “History”, “Politics”, “Mathematics”, “Physics”, “Literature”, “Games”, “St. Petersburg”, “Nature”, “Music”, “Religion”, “Languages”, “Computer Science”, “Discoveries and Inventions”) was carried out. The level of students’ knowledge in most areas can be assessed as insufficient. The respondents showed the lowest results in the “Discoveries and Inventions” blocks (0,6 correct answer in average), “Politics” (1,1) and “Music” (1.6), the highest - in the “Biology” (3,9 points) and “Chemistry” (3.8) blocks (that is explainable). The low general knowledge of medical students in the future may complicate their professional activities, spoil the doctors’ public image and the prestige of the medical profession.
