THE FIRST MOSCOW DENTAL SCHOOL
Abstract
The formation of domestic dentistry as an independent scientific and practical discipline took place at the end of the 19th century, one of the evidences of this process was reform of dental education (which until that time had been reduced to apprenticeships in private offices of mentors). After adoption in 1891 the law “On the transformation of education in the art of dentistry” private dental schools started to be opened in Russia, third of them chronologically (although the first one by the value ), was the First Moscow Dental School of Dr. I.M. Kovarsky. On the basis of published reports on the activities of the school and archival materials, the article analyzes the work of this school, which had trained more than 2000 (according to some estimates - 2500) dentists over 27 years of its existence, which amounted to almost a third of all dentists in the country at the beginning of the 20th century. Information is provided on the social status of students, school teachers, the peculiaraties of the training program (which included, in addition to such special subjects as dentiatry and prosthetics, general medical disciplines), medical work of the school. Building of the school made up according to a special design, modernly equipped , brilliant teaching staff of the school, teaching and practical use of the implementation of the most advanced methods of treating dental diseases, high estimation of contemporaries -odontologists of the school activities and the prestige of being taught in it (attracting nobles and foreign citizens to the ranks of students) allow us to say that the First Moscow Dental School became one of the best schools of Russia after the adoption of the law of 1891.
