HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL HYGIENE OF ST’ PETERSBURG STATE PEDIATRIC MEDICAL UNIVERSITY
Abstract
The article is devoted to the history of the Department of General Hygiene of Saint-Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University (since 1925 - Institute of Maternity and Infancy, since 1932 - Hospital medical school, since 1935 - Leningrad Pediatric Medical Institute, since 2012 - Saint-Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University), which in 2019 turned 85 years old. The Department was organized in 1934 - during the period when the establishment of the Institute was becoming a higher educational institution. Information is presented about the organizer and the first head of the Department Prof. P.N. Lastochkin, and the subsequent heads: Prof. M.K. Markaryan (1955-1963), Prof. M.G. Kolomiytseva (1965-1970), Prof. M.N. Logatkin (1971-1985), Prof. V.I. Baev (1986-2015), Prof. S.N. Lvov (2015-2018). The names of teachers and employees who worked at the Department in different years are given. The main items of professional activities of the Department in all periods of its existence were pedagogical, methodological, scientific, including the work of а student scientific society, assistance to practical health care, etc. The main directions of research work that solved both fundamental problems and met the needs of practice are shown: hygiene of children and adolescents, nutrition problems, ecology of childhood, methodological foundations of hygienic monitoring of the environment and health of various groups of the population, water supply problems, the biological role of trace elements in the body of children and adults, physical development of children of different ages, etc. An important achievement of Prof. S.N. Lvov and the staff of the Department was opening of a new direction of students’ training is the specialty «Medical and Preventive Care» at the University.
