Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases retain their leading position in mortality, their number is steadily growing both in Russia and in other countries. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), coronary heart disease (CHD) and ischemic stroke account for about 15% of all deaths. In St. Petersburg, more than 400 cases of acute stroke per 100 thousand population are annually registered, of which more than 80% of cases are ischemic stroke, which in 40–45% of cases is caused by occlusion or stenosis of the brachycephalic arteries (BCA). The most effective way to prevent cerebral infarction is carotid endarterectomy (CAE) and other surgical methods for correcting stenotic lesions. According to neurologists, a significant portion of ischemic strokes could be prevented with timely surgical intervention, the success of which largely depends on the results of preliminary imaging. To date, there is no uniform approach to radiodiagnosis of stenotic lesions of the BCA, signs of instability of the atherosclerotic plaque (AP). This article presents the results of diagnosis and surgical treatment of more than 2500 patients with BCA pathology.
